Shape Shifter transforms a functional planting map of Barnet (Winter 2024/2025) into a tactile photographic publication.
Using real geographic data from the Barnet Tree Portal, I visited each marked planting location and documented the newly planted trees. The project shifts mapping from information into experience ,from abstract data into physical observation.
Through iterative experimentation, the work evolved from map abstraction and spatial layering into a hand-bound book. Material choices, recycled paper, dark green book cloth, custom endpapers, and hot foil stamping, reinforce the environmental and documentary nature of the project.
Bound using Coptic stitching, the book opens fully, allowing the images to breathe while maintaining a crafted structural integrity.
The publication explores how cartography can become narrative, how data can become memory, and how design can transform geography into material storytelling.
